Photo 24 Oct 2 notes "Letting the cat out of the bag" is a phrase that originated in the Middle Ages when merchants tried to pawn off street cats on unsuspecting customers. Back then, livestock was sold in a sack so that the owner could carry their purchase home rather than lead it with a rope. Often times these merchants got away with their fraud, but on occasion, the cats would let out a meow or climb out of the bag to reveal the deception. It is for that reason that we today call a surprising reveal of truth - letting the cat out of the bag.
